Declan O’Dempsey to provide training to the Equality and Human Rights Commission
Cloisters is proud to announce that Declan O’Dempsey of Cloisters has been awarded the contract to provide training to the Equality and Human Rights Commission on the use of international treaties in UK law.
Catherine Casserley together with Declan will provide the training materials for the course on the 23rd March this year.
The training aims to explain the techniques necessary for deploying the Conventions as part of a series exploring the UN human rights treaties and conventions that are most relevant to the Commission’s work. This includes:
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)
International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR)
International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD)
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)
Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment (CAT)
Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol (CRPD)
Additionally, with the prospect of Brexit, and the prospect of a UK Bill of Rights, the importance of using international treaties assumes importance at the level of making effective submissions to the courts on how to reconcile common law and statute law to these international standards, and the best persuasive use that can be made of these instruments when briefing legislators. Declan and others will be providing guidance on these issues over the coming months.
