Transport Committee Publishes New Report on Accessible Transport: Legal Obligations

The Transport Committee has today published the report of its inquiry into “Accessible transport: legal obligations”.

The report, entitled  Access denied: rights versus reality in disabled people’s access to transport, sets out the everyday difficulties that disabled people experience in accessing transport and in enforcing their rights under the Equality Act 2010.

Cloisters’ Catherine Casserley provided evidence to the Transport Committee. She highlighted the complexity and fragmentation of transport accessibility legislation, emphasising  the need for clear standards and regulations to ensure that transport providers understand their obligations and to make enforcement more effective. She also discussed the challenges disabled individuals face in bringing legal claims under the Equality Act 2010 due to the complexity of the law and the risks involved.

The report makes a number of recommendations to ensure accessibility and enforceable rights,  including a review of the legislation.
