  • Professor Alan Neal is Professor of Law and Director of the Employment Law Research Unit at the University of Warwick. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Salford and at the University of Paris II. He was previously Professor of Law at the University of Leicester (1988-2000) and Visiting Professor (1993-1996) at the University of Paris I (Sorbonne).

    As a door tenant at Cloisters, he undertakes advisory work in all his major fields of interest and his expertise in employment law and his international reputation enhance Cloisters' seminars and workshops arranged for solicitors and others.

    He has held judicial office since 1994 as a part-time Chairman of Employment Tribunals (London Central). He has been Convenor of the European Association of Labour Court Judges since 1996 and is a member of the ILO's group of senior labour judges.

    Professor Neal is Technical Director of the International Journal of Comparative Labour Law and Industrial Relations and was its Editor-in-Chief between 1984-1995. He sits on the editorial boards of a number of other international and comparative journals.

    As a specialist on European, international and comparative employment law, he has served on various expert committees for the Social Affairs Directorate of the European Commission since 1985 and acts as an Independent Expert for the ILO. He regularly advises national governments in the field of employment law and social policy, and is currently advising the Chinese government on labour law and dispute resolution reforms. He is involved in the provision of specialised judicial training, both in the United Kingdom and abroad, in the areas of employment law and human rights.
