Tom Coghlin QC and Chris Milsom successfully defended their respective clients, the Leicester Theatre Trust and Global Artists, against actress Seyi Omooba’s claim for religious discrimination and harassment.
The litigation, which arose from a Facebook post in which she espoused her Christian-inspired views that “homosexuality is not right”, had been described by The Stage as “one of the most significant theatre-related hearings in recent times.”
Following re-publication of the social media post by a fellow actor and a subsequent social media storm, Ms Omooba was dismissed from a production of The Color Purple in which she was employed to play the iconic gay character of Celie. Her agency similarly removed her as a client. Ms Omooba, supported by Christian Concern, pursued discrimination and harassment complaints accordingly however the Employment Tribunal concluded that the reasons for her treatment were truly severable from her beliefs.
